Salalah is the main city in the province, it is located on the southern part of the Sultanate of Oman and it is linked to all parts of the Sultanate through a road attached to the capital Muscat 1023 km far. Moreover the city is considered to be the civil, administrative, and cultural capital with its population and large size. The city contain many archeological sites such as Albaleed, Salalah museum, Nabi Saleh footprint, and religious shrines such as the tomb of  nabi Imran and nabi Ayoob as well as many water springs such as Humran, Arzat, Athom and Tubruk, and other attractive beautiful natural sites and soft white wonderful sandy beaches.


Archaeological sites in salalah :

Al Baleed :

Al Baleed archaeological site is located on the costal strip of salalah in the area between Dhariz and Hafa. It is known to be one of the ancient cities and the most important commercial ports. The city was built on a small island and was known as (Al Dafah) it prospered and grown in the 12t and16th century AD where the remains can be seen. The researchers agrees through the archaeological evidence and through the studies of clay and organic matter that the site go back in history  to the era before Islam, and has gained a unique Islamic elegance in architecture which is clearly demonstrated through the great mosque which is considered to be one of the most ancient mosques in the world. The mosque believed to be built in the 17th century AH – 13th century AD containing 144-column. Moreover, Al Baleed Fortress and many coins where discovered. The evidence indicate the site was inhabited since the late fifth millennium BC and early fourth millennium BC, then it was re- build in the fourth century AH the fifth century AD.  this city played  an important role in world trade in the Middle Ages, where its commercial relation were extended to China, India and Sind, East Africa, Yemen, Iraq  and Europe where the frankincense trade was flourishing at that time.

Ard Al Loban museum:

The museum was established and officially opened on 23 July 2007 under the patronage of His Highness Sayid Haitham Bin Tariq Al-Saeed, Minister of Heritage and Culture in the presence of their Highnesses and Excellencies the Ministers and advisers, Excellencies, sheikhs and notables of Dhofar. The museum provides for its visitors and knowledge seekers the opportunity to learn about Oman through its long history and it consist of tow halls,

The historic Hall and it includes 6 sections as follows:

1- Oman and the geographical terrain, explain its coastal strips, islands and the gulf.

2- Oman in ancient times, explain the settlement centers varied in different parts of Oman since the first beginnings of human civilization demonstrated in fishing on the coast and the civilization of the Stone Age man

3- Dhofar Ard Al Loban

4- Hall of History under the name of Islam, the people of Oman

5- Features of the history of Oman

6- Contemporary renaissance of Oman

Marin hall

Divided into 7 sections

1- The exhibits refers to the maritime heritage and knowledge of Omani navigation

2-The exhibits refers to the relation of Omani residents to the Sea

3- Building boats and sailing vessels

4-" sailing " the exhibits refers to the importance of navigation and successful methods used to know the paths of  the stars and the movement of the sun and the moon to determine the sites and knowledge  to read the clouds and the color of  water,  the waves and usage of birds in determining the direction of land.

5-"Trade" the exhibits shows the frankincense which was transferred through the ports of Samhram and Al Baleed and Raysut.

6-"The hypothetical reality of the sea" it demonstrate a model of the ship Albgla, a types of large ships that were used for the long flights from Oman to Zanzibar and Mombasa

7-Embodies the Renaissance invention, a phase of the steam generators and their use in ships

Prophet Imran tomb :

Located in ALqawf,  next to the building of Dhofar Municipality. The tomb is too long inside a rectangular room surrounded by a small garden, and a mosque called the Mosque of the Prophet Imran peace be upon him.

Prophet Ayoob tomb :

Located in the north-west of Salalah in the summit of Mountain of Atin, it can be reached through the way leading to Jarziz water spring. It contains three rest houses, a mosque, a modern restaurant.

Prophet saleh footprint:

Located in the center of AL-Hasselah area next to Al Nasr club from the east and it can be accessed through July 23 street. In this site the footprint of the camel of Prophet Saleh, who is mentioned in the Koran, can be seen on a small mountain and it has been fenced and covered by the authorities to prevent it from erosion effects. Next to the footprint there is a small cave and there are some holes next to the footprints said to be the blood of the camel. The site is turned to be one of the favorite places throughout the year by the visitors who want to know about the footprints.

Ain hamran fort:

It is 14 km fare from the city of salalah, on the way to taqah


Nature and tourism in salalah

Humran water spring:

 One of the most verdant water springs which is located in the north of Al maamorah area 17km far from the city. This water spring is used as a drinking source for the animals and for irrigation purpose. It includes different plants and trees such as coconuts, fig, and nabk. According to the inhabitant many agricultural products, such as farms corn and sugar cane, sweet potatoes, depended on the water of spring in irrigation. The water spring is a popular place throughout the year specially in khareef season and on the weekends.  

Arzat water spring:

It has the most of water. It is the water source for Arzat farm and the government farms near the mamora palace. The municipality has decorated the area surrounding it, where there is a beautiful garden full of attractive shade trees for the visitors, school children and photographers.

Sahalnoot water spring:

It can be reached through Muscat Salalah high way about 15 km far from the city of Salalah.

Jarziz water spring:

Located in Atin plane 14 km far from Salalah and it contain a rivulet extended for several kilometers in the plane beside other water springs.

 Almaghseel Beach:

Located on the west of salalah city. its famous for the silver soft sandy beaches and natural fountains which can be seen from ALmarnif cave. The fountains gush out for several meters on the air a scene which is enjoyed by the visitors of the place.

Attin plain:

The formation of the mountains of Dhofar governorate is magnificent and delightful scene for the viewers. Attin plain is part of beautiful string located in the north west of salalah. The plain is a tourist attraction provides plenty of services for the visitors, such as set up tents in the fall season, visit the water springs, or the Municipal Entertainment Center where a variety of activities took place during the Salalah Tourism Festival, beside outlets for shopping and restaurants to sell popular food in addition to toilets and mosques for men and women

Almarneef cave:

One of the beautiful caves located in Almagsyl beach 40 km from the city salalah, the cave is a tourist attraction specialy during khareef season. It overlooks the sea and the natural fountains. The government developed the area through the visitor centre, fences for protection, walkways and bridges.

Ain hamran cave:

Known as the bat cave, where a large numbers of  bats lives there  and can be accessed from Almamorah roundabout in the way to Taqah.

 Sahoor cave:

It  can be reached throughout Salalah, Muscat road along the valley of Nahiz

 ِAlmagseel lagoons reserves:

Almagsyl lagoons  is located on the eastern side of Alqamar Mountain an area of ??half  km square  and a length of 3km  and 150m width. The importance of the reserves lies in maintaining different species of birds the habitat and migratory. When passing through this lagoon dozens of bird species can be witnessed coming from Africa, Europe and India. in previous time hundreds of species where counted specially in winter. Due to the importance of the lagoon it has been counted within the scope of nature reserves.

 Aldhareez lagoons reserves:

This lagoon is located in the eastern borders of Salalah in Aldhariz  the water is surrounded with plants such as thick reeds, making the environment suitable for breeding. Many types of birds have been recorded in this area up to 80 type. The lagoon is distinguished with a moderate diversity of fish. It is considered to be a perfect place for trips.

 Al Baleed lagoon reserves

It Includes a historical and natural civilization at the same time. Compared to other lagoons in dhofar this lagoon is poor in its biological diversity, the types which have been recorded only two types of fish. The authority fenced the archeological area to protect and maintain the normal life. Moreover the first archaeological park in the Sultanate was established.

 This lagoon was named after the ancient city, which lies on the banks of the lagoon where it is connected to the sea. In the past it was used as a port and currently it is classified within the sites of World Heritage.

 Awqad lagoon reserve:

This lagoon is located on the outskirts of the city awqad ??about 16 hectares. It has been included within the lagoon reserves. This lagoon is frequently inhabited   by birds. Amongst the objectives of protecting this lagoon is to protect the wildlife and find  effective ways to use it in the treatment of overlap between sea water and the water  of Salalah  and use the surrounding  sites in tourism.

Alqurm lagoon reserve:

these two lagoons are called "theet" and they are located on the way from salalah to raysot. They are distinguished with a unique  botanical diversity thus it contain more than 13 type  of  botany and 9 type of fish in addition to alqurm trees. The authorities fenced the location for protection reasons however it allowed to use the grace as fodder. The location has been nominated after the massive qurm tree growing there.

 

Traditional handicrafts in Salalah

The traditional handicraft and folklore in Salalah verify such as (carpentry, smithery, keeping animals, tailoring, embroidery , planting, and trading) industries ( boat building, pottery, palm handicrafts, robs, diary products, Fishing nets, halwa, gold and silver, wood and leather) .
